We are happy to announce that we will be co-hosting a virtual event called African American Food Ways: Sustainable Agriculture and Cuisine Across Cultures alongside Community, Environment and Development Club and Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences! The event will be held on December 7 from 7-8:30 pm EST via Zoom. Students, faculty and community members are invited to join this important discussion about racial injustice within food and agricultural systems

The event will include a compelling discussion titled Uprooting Racism, Seeding Sovereignty” from Soul Fire Farm. This community farm is located in the upper Hudson valley and actively promotes food equity through their initiatives, trainings, workshops, and other programs that focus on diversity and empowerment. The powerful program will feature members of the Soul Fire Farm team, performance by distinguished poet Naima Penniman, and a keynote address from the farm’s co-founder and manager, Leah Penniman. Following the presentationsLeah  will join the event live to discuss and answer questions about racial inequality within the food system with participants.

Senior English Dawson is organizing the African American Food Ways event. Dawson is a community, environment, and development and environmental resource management dual major, and she is enthusiastic about this critical topic.

I think that this event is especially appropriate with today’s current climate around racial injustice, as well as environmental needs, Dawson said. “No matter your background, there will be something to gain from listening to Leah present.”

We hope to see you at this powerful, educational discussion! Be sure to register ahead of time through the button below. Any questions regarding the event should be directed to English Dawson at ebd5123@psu.edu.
