Hi! My name is Hannah Ciavarella, and I am a 2024 Cohort Intern at the Student Farm at Penn State. I am currently a freshman intending to major in Management and minor in Agronomy. My passion for sustainable agriculture grew from a spontaneous curiosity into a strong interest of mine. When I applied to be part of the Student Farm Fall Crew in 2023, I didn’t know much about farming and wasn’t sure if I would like it. My interest in sustainable agriculture grew after working on the farm and taking AGECO courses. There is something so inspiring about growing plants in a way that takes care of the earth and provides it for us. I am excited about this opportunity at the Student Farm and look forward to becoming more integrated within the Student Farm community.

Sustainable agriculture is important to me because of its potential impact on the world. I think sustainability is finding ways to be as productive as possible while leaving the planet better than we found it, no matter how slight our differences are. The Student Farm has already taught me so much about the practical application of what it means to be a sustainable operation. I love the community here because of how much everyone cares about what they do and how they do it. The teamwork and community are incredible, and it is a place where learning is encouraged. The friendship I have seen and experienced here is fantastic; people encourage each other to learn and grow. I am excited to jump into a leadership position at the Student Farm because spreading awareness is a priority. From encouraging the Penn State community to be more mindful about their consumption choices to acknowledging the Indigenous history of our land, I am encouraged and inspired by the awareness and reflection that is provoked.

So far, I have become much more aware of the challenges and hardships of growing sustainably. I feel like this has prepared me much more for my position here and any agricultural venture I may take part in, in the future. While learning how to face the challenges of sustainable agriculture, I have also learned a lot about the positive effects of environmentally conscious growth. As farmers, I do not believe there is anything more fulfilling we can do than caring for and respecting the planet, as we owe it so much.
