Hello everyone! My name is Max Maurer, and I am a sophomore intern at the Student Farm for the year of 2024. I am currently studying Agricultural sciences and have a keen interest in food systems and the nutritional aspect of what we all consume. I am just a small-town country boy from Snyder County Pennsylvania. I grew up in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania in a family that was heavily involved in agriculture. My grandparents owned a wonderful farmers’ market a couple of years back and it laid the foundation for my agricultural pursuit. I have distinct memories of having free range over the produce freezer and eating berries like it was my job. Unfortunately, due to poor circumstances, the market has since been closed, but my dream to continue the business lives on!

I came to Penn State because I knew that if I wanted to pursue an education in agriculture, this was the place to be. Since arriving at Penn State, I have been involved with several clubs and figured that I needed a place to be involved in that had people with similar interests. So, I applied to be an intern at the Student Farm, and I am surely not disappointed.

I have learned so much about sustainable farming in such a small amount of time. My fellow interns and the staff are very knowledgeable, and they have enlightened me on so many aspects of sustainable farming. The Student Farm was appealing to me because I have a deep desire within me to make the world a better place. I feel that because of my upbringing and hobbies, I am destined to contribute to food security and healthy eating in a way that is harmonious with the environment. I have learned so much information related to agroecology and sustainable production, and I feel so motivated to continue learning and getting involved in my community. I feel that I am a natural born leader, but I have yet to bring that out and show it to the world. The Student Farm is a great opportunity for me to create great connections with great people, and to just get back to my roots, which is the farm. I am looking forward to the character development I can receive from my time at the Student Farm, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone who wants to get involved!
