Hi there! My name is Justin, and I’m currently interning at the Student Farm. I’m studying CED and international agriculture as my minor. Originally from Philly, I enjoy spending my free time outdoors, listening to music, lifting heavy weights, and getting my hands dirty. No wonder I ended up working on the farm! Though I’m new to agriculture, I find this experience to be an excellent way to learn about food systems and sustainability. I’m excited to get more involved in the Student Farm and gain further knowledge on this topic.
Being from Philadelphia, I had no prior experience in farming. However, becoming an intern at the student farm has been a wonderful surprise for me. Initially, I had no idea about the technical and intricate details that go into farming, especially when it comes to sustainability. There are various techniques involved in seeding, weeding, and cultivating, and a lot of planning and scheduling is required to maintain the quality of the farm. But, I love every bit of it. My favorite aspect of farming has been learning about pest control. Identifying pests and finding the best approach to get rid of them without using harmful pesticides has been fascinating. Food is an essential part of our society, and being able to produce food while reducing our impact on the environment is crucial to me. I am glad to be a part of a community striving to produce quality food without harming the environment.
To me, leadership means dedicating yourself to the group you’re leading. A good leader is someone who uplifts their group to be their best selves and work solely for the betterment of the group. Some qualities a good leader might possess include strong communication skills, empathy, strategic thinking, and the ability to inspire others to take action. A good leader should also be fair, trustworthy, and able to make tough decisions when necessary. Ultimately, a strong leader is someone who can bring people together towards a common goal and create a positive impact on the world around them.
