Each year, the Student Farm Club provides active club members with the immersive experience of learning about urban agriculture in a nearby city. These students then take the information and experiences they collected on their trip and educate other club members, friends, and classmates about the importance of urban agriculture and the incredible diversity of farms and community garden spaces that serve many communities.
The urban agriculture field trip is a great way for students to learn about how urban agriculture differs from traditional agriculture, engage current and lived issues of food security, and understand how community members are tackling issues within their food systems. Our students also gain unprecedented opportunities to network with the organizations and professionals they meet, and they are exposed to unique career opportunities and paths they may not be familiar with.
By giving students the opportunity to explore issues within different cities to find innovative solutions to shared problems, our students become well-educated in their advocacy for urban food systems, and they are better equipped to serve their communities upon graduation from Penn State. Thank you for making a gift in support of this effort during GivingTuesday!
