What is Beananza?
Beananza is a summer-long series of programming that lets you follow along as the student farm grows, cares for, and processes dried beans. This project is a collaboration between the Penn State Student Farm and the Pasto Agricultural Museum and is open to people of all ages and all levels of growing knowledge and experience. Our first two events (April 20th and May 18th ) will include a bag of beans for you to take home and plant in your own garden to watch grow along with us! We’ll also have an email list that you can join for some basic growing information and occasional reminders to water and cultivate. Along with this we’ll be hosting a series of events throughout the summer focused on all things beans! This will include a workday on plant care and basic sustainable agriculture practices, a cultural night full of bean-related stories, poetry, and art, and a processing night at the end of the growing season where we can celebrate our harvest with some chili!

What Beans Are We Having?
We’ll have the following varieties to choose from at our first two events (April 20th and May 18th):

- King Chity Pink Bean
- Christmas Lima Bean
- Vaquero Bean
- Whipple Bean
- Super Lucky 2024 Black Eyed Pea
- Scarlet Runner Bean
Each has a unique look and flavor to explore. All seeds are free and we’ll be there to talk to you about each type and how to get them started in your own garden!
