The Sustainable Food Systems Network (SFSN) and Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm at Penn State is offering a paid internship opportunity for a current student interested in working with our team as a graphic design intern. Under supervision of the program director, this student will be responsible for overseeing the visual identity of the Student Farm, as it appears online, in print, and in official promotional materials.
The Student Farm at Penn State is a cross-institution initiative of Student Affairs, now in its ninth year of operation on a four-acre site approximately two miles north of University Park campus. Production consists of ecological management of diversified vegetable, herb and fruit crops, grown by student interns, as well as Student Farm Club members and volunteers. Programming includes multiple events per month, and sales marketing.
Hours are 10-12 hours per week, with some fluctuation based on project load throughout the year. Work is typically completed remotely with weekly in-person meetings and occasional in-person events. The target start date is by March 2025. Summer work is flexible, and the position has a good possibility of continuation for multiple years. Pay is $11.75/hour.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute print and digitally formatted materials, in multiple sizes and formats, to market events, campaigns, and initiatives
- Creatively execute the Student Farm brand across all platforms to create a cohesive image
- Work simultaneously on ~5+ projects based on Student Farm and SFSN needs
- Complete multiple revisions efficiently
- Must be adaptable and capable of piecing together disparate elements of a design created by previous interns, such as illustrations, photographs, techniques, and styles
- Occasional social media management and creating written content for captions
- Work closely with the Communications Intern to schedule digital content, collect and analyze analytics, and develop social media strategy
- Communicate regularly with students, interns, faculty, staff, and community members


Qualifications
- Current Penn State student with at least a 3.0 GPA
- Superb written, interpersonal and oral communication skills
- Able to learn quickly, prioritize multiple projects, set deadlines and enjoy a fast-paced work environment
- Proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) is essential, and illustration skills are strongly preferred
- Able to work with diverse groups and individuals, in indoor and outdoor settings
- Able to work with minimal supervision and manage schedule independently, demonstrate versatility
- An interest in and knowledge about food systems issues and concepts is strongly preferred
- Own transportation for occasional visits to the farm, own computer and internet access
- Photography and videography creation and editing experience are preferred, but not required
- Experience with HTML code and website content management systems (ex: WordPress) is preferred, but not required.
